Out into the nature

This special exhibition was on display in the BARNIM PANORAMA from 7th of September 2013 until 10th of September 2015.

A trip into nature is good for the soul, and at the turn of the 20th Century, this was also the case. “Out into Nature” shows the beginnings and the effects of tourism in Barnim. The development of the charming landscape to the north of the capital began in 1901 with the construction of a railway from Berlin-Reinickendorf all the way to Schorfheide. The so-called “Heidekrautbahn” train line, now known as the Niederbarnimer Railway Company (from the German “Niederbamimer Eisenbahngesellschaft”), helped with the birth of modern tourism in Barnim. The train was an integral part of creating the contemporary need for rest and relaxation and the trend of going out into nature on the weekend and taking short vacations.

In 1923 Wandlitz opened the municipality’s seaside resort. The so-called “Strandbad Wandlitzsee” quickly became a tourist magnet - in part because it was so easy and comfortable to reach from Berlin by train. Wandlitz and its delightful surrounding area, especially the crystal-clear lake Liepnitzsee, quickly grew to be popular vacation destinations. Indeed, the region was also a popular haven for celebrities and politicians.
