Path round the Liepnitz lake

Start and end of the trip BARNIM PANORAMA (800 m from Wandlitz Station) – Wandlitz Station (NE27)
Length and duration approx. 13 km, three hours (can be shortened by approx. 3 km in summer by using the ferry)

Liebnitzsee

After a visit to the BARNIM PANORAMA, the tour continues in the direction of Wandlitzsee Station. It leads through the “villa colony” at the “Drei heiligen Pfühlen” (“three sacred ponds”) which was built in 1907/1908 following an architecture competition and features a remarkable water tower which is under a monument preservation order. At a turning area, the route dips into an idyllic stretch of deciduous woodland.

The wood soon gives way to a clear view of the lake where fishers fish for the vendace so famous among gourmets. The narrow path along the southern shore runs along deadwood, which is full of life. If you are lucky you will be able to watch Black, Great Spotted and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers that hunt for insects here. The Grosse Werder island arches up from the middle of the lake – in the summer season, a ferry transfers visitors here from the northern and southern shores. According to tradition, in the middle of the 19th century, Gustav Spengler pulled the Count of Redern out of a sump here. In return, the Count gave him the island with its farm to manage. The Spenglers later opened a restaurant there which is still in operation today.

The route continues via Ützdorf to the northern shore of the lake and the high-level path there, which is reached after a somewhat breathtaking up and down trek. However, it is worth the effort. The full beauty of the lake covering a surface area of 114 hectares now lies at your feet.

Follow the road from BARNIM PANORAMA Breitscheidstrasse, in a southerly direction. After approx. 100 m turn off to the left into Langer Grund → Prenzlauer Chaussee → left into Lanker Weg and follow the sign »Zu den Pfühlen« or the marks with a blue dot (Lanker Weg → Ruhlsdorfer Strasse → An der Bogenheide → An den Pfühlen) → Behind the turning loop the path dips into the wood (the path marked with the blue dot turns off to the left) → continue straight on → the Liepnitz Lake then appears on the left and the route turns off to the Uferweg shore path (yellow dot) → Follow these dot marks round the lake (note: at the end of the south shore the path leads away from the lake and only comes back to the shore 700 m further on behind Ützdorf) → After passing the high-level path and the woodland swimming pool, the path marked with the yellow dot leads to the asphalted path which you already know on the western shore  → there turn left and then continue along the path marked with a blue bar to Wandlitz Station.
